Description
WILLIAM GIEIARLESsassari., or BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 79,371,dated June 30, 1868.
IMrnovEMENrjIN GUTLEEY.
llge Srlgthule termi: tu in tlgrse tltrrsttsut mit mating mit nilnsrum TO ALL W'HOMl IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that" I,`WILLIAMy CHARLES MAsoN, of BeaverFalls, in the `county of Beaver, and State oi' Pennsylvania, haverinvented a'new and useful Imp'rovem-e`ntY in Pocket and Table-Cutlery; andI do hereby declare the following to be a fullr clear, and exact description thereof.
My improvement consists in Athe attaching of the scale tothe handle of table-knives,forks, case-knives, andother articles of cntleryfby means of the bolster-pieces, and without any rivets, pins, or otherfastenings, through the scales. p
The scale of the handle of articles of cutlery is usually made of ivory, shell, `motlie`r-of-pearl, or other similarmaterial,`and is fastened to the handle'or tineby means of rivets, which pass through the scale, and require to be hammered, in orderfto hold the scale to its place. This operation is troublesome and expensive, and wherethe scale is adelicatefor brittle material, it is apt to be Acracked or broken. Sometimes theI scalo of knives will become loose, land sometimes it will crack near to the rivet, thus spoiling the appearance ofthe arti' cle. My improvement ohviatesall thescdiilieulties, and lmakes a cheaper and more henutiflil nish to cutlery.
To enable others skilled in theart to use -my invention, I will proceed toodescribe the manner of its `use.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specieation- I Figure lis a side viewlof the handle of the tuhlelrnifc with my improvement.
Figure 2 is aview of the haelt of the handle of the same knife.
Figure 3 is a representation-of the scale detachedfrom the knife.
I Figure-4-is a representation of `the bolster detached from the knife.
Lilie letters represent the same parts whenever used in the several figures.
In th'e drawing, a represents the tine of the-knife; b b are the holsters, which are'secured tothe tine by means of rivets c c, in the ordinary manner, as shown in iig. 2. The edges of these holsters which adjoin-tflref` scale d are bevelled, the widest surface of the holsters beingturned-outside', so that the edges mayvoverlap the corresponding edges of the sealed, which is similarly hevelled in the opposite'direction, so as to ritl closely between theholster b b at each endof the knife-handle.
i 1'lhe ends of the holsters b next' tothe scale are not only hcvelled, but nre also indented, or otherwise so shaped :xs-that the scale, tting-into-the holst-ers l1 b', is longer in the middle than at either edge.
By this means not only is thescale held doxvn `to the handle of the knife by the bevelled ends of the holsters, lbut it is also prevented from slipping sideways `by the inden'ting of the holsters', and thus, the scale being made exactly to fit between thebolsters, and being put in place before the holsters are rivetedto the knifehandle, is as securely fastened in place as iffit were riveted, without any pin or rivet being passed through or inserted in it.- i A 1 Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y Y Securing the scale to knives', forks, and-other articles of cutlery, by bevellingand indenting the edges of vthe bolster-pieces, and tting the edgesof the scale into such bevels and indentations,` the holsters being attached Ito th'ebandles by rivets in the ordinary manner, substantially as described..
' In testimony whereof, I, the said WILLIAM CHARLES MASON, have hereunto set my hand.
" i WM. C. MASON.
